This study set out to compare the nature of student-selected and teacher-assigned pairs while they were engaged in collaborative writing. The fact that students work in pairs or small groups does not guarantee successful pair work. Therefore, it is important that teachers reflect on the composition of the pair and/or group before using both pair and group activities in the classroom.
