Explanation of the Post

Denvers (2015-2017), Padilla et al. (2017) states the need to develop more research on Roma university students and promote their visibility to counteract the traditional homogenised and simplified perception of the Roma population. The perception of discrimination experienced by the Roma community, both in society and in academic settings, can lead some individuals to choose not to disclose their ethnic identity. In the research conducted by Flecha & Serradell (2019–2022), 12% of the students surveyed admitted to having deliberately hidden their Roma background at some point. All of them cited fear of rejection or being discriminated against as the main reason for not making their ethnicity visible.
