Explanation of the Post
In the school context, racism manifests itself both in explicit attitudes and behaviors, as well as through microaggressions, perpetuation of stereotypes, low academic expectations and lack of sensitivity to cultural diversity. School discrimination has a significant impact on the educational and personal experience of children and adolescents, especially in environments where diverse cultures coexist. A student’s educational capabilities do not depend on his or her origin, but on the interactions he or she receives and the quality of these interactions. The construction of a positive and strong ethnic identity, as well as pride in this identity and racial socialization, especially through families, are key factors in facing and managing discriminatory situations, achieving academic success and enriching the educational community, while reinforcing their motivation, self-esteem and emotional connection with school.
