THE RULES OF SOCIAL IMPACT SCIENCE (SIS) PLATFORM

(updateable as needed, consult this document regularly)

Social Impact Science is committed to the elimination of discrimination and the equitable treatment of all individuals. Contributors to the SIS Platforms are therefore expected to treat others with mutual respect, to accept others without biases based on differences of any kind (i.e. gender, race or ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, etc.), and to abide by the following Code of Conduct, which encourages positive speech and behaviors and addresses unacceptable acts. It also outlines reporting mechanisms and potential penalties for unacceptable behaviors. We are committed to actively fostering a welcoming environment whether online or offline, formal or informal. Please read the following carefully and behave in this space according to the highest principles of respect and inclusion.

1. Please adjust your nickname for our SISPlatform server to match your real name. (e.g. Full name or name and initial).

2. Treat others with respect. Actively read and learn from the experiences of others and engage constructively with their ideas, particularly those most marginalized in society. Support indigenous peoples’ teachings, worldviews, and ways of knowing, especially in places with histories of settler colonialism

3. All members of the SIS Platforms are responsible for fostering inclusion: In addition to not using sexist, racist, heterosexist, cissexist, ableist, classist, casteist, or otherwise derogatory language; this means being open to accepting and processing criticism in a non-defensive manner. It also includes community accountability in recognizing where harms have been done and seeking to promote a collegial environment for all.

4. Avoid exclusionary behavior. This can take many forms such as making people feel unsafe or unwelcome at SIS Platform; dismissing or minimizing the value of disciplines, knowledges, and creative or applied practices; and targeting members for harassment, among others. These behaviors are not tolerated in our community.

5. Any form of sexual (or other identity-related) harassment is strictly prohibited. Such forms include, but are not limited to: verbal harassment and inappropriate sexual comments; deliberate intimidation or stalking; unwelcome sexual attention or sexual advances; harassing or intrusive recording without permission; using a position of authority to coerce or groom people for manipulation or harassment; or advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

6. Members who experience verbal or non-verbal harassment, threatening or intimidating acts, sexual harassment, and/or identity-based discrimination, or bystanders who witness such treatment, should report these incidents to the SIS Platform.

7. Coollaborators and admins will evaluate incidents and determine an appropriate penalty. Responses may include (but are not limited to) the following: asking the perpetrator to cease their behavior, issuing a verbal warning, temporarily removing the perpetrator from the platform , permanently removing the perpetrator from the platform , reporting the individual’s behavior to platforms leadership, or proposing that the perpetrator be barred from future membership in the SIS Platforms.

8. If you find yourself questioning whether something you want to post violates any of these rules or not, the answer is don’t post it.

*** Note: This Code of Conduct was developed through research into best practices for codes of conduct (E.g. Foxx, A. J., Barak, R. S., Lichtenberger, T. M., Richardson, L. K., Rodgers, A. J. and Williams, E. W. (2019). Evaluating the prevalence and quality of conference codes of conduct. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Jul 2019, 116 (30) 14931-14936. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1819409116) and by drawing on similar policies from AoIR and DiGRA. Thank you to the many committee members in these organizations who contributed time and energy to developing inclusivity and equity practices.
